My First Experience with Maca

Recently the co-author of this blog, Candace, wrote about maca and how she uses it. It sounded like such an excellent product that I wanted to try some myself!! Last week we were on vacation in Penn Valley, CA visiting some good friends, shopping at an excellent co-op where I ran across the bag shown below for $15. I don't even know if that's a great price, but I got it anyway because I really wanted to try it. Plus there's about 91 servings in a bag, so it will last awhile, thus I figured the $15 would be worth it to try.

I added the recommended teaspoon to a chai latte I made for myself the following morning instead of having coffee. We had been staying up really late with our friends because we don't see them often so I needed a pick-me-up and wanted to try an alternative. I certainly felt an energy boost! We also went on a hike that morning which I felt great throughout, despite one of the longest hills I've ever hiked! Maca is said to be an overall hormone stabilizer and energy booster. Woo-hoo!! In case you're wondering, this does have a slight sweet warmth to it in flavor, but I'm sure you wouldn't notice it in a smoothie.

Thinking about some of my audience being young moms or, potentially, pregnant, I did some research on it's safety during that crucial period. Good news!! Maca is completely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding!! So if you're used to a caffeine boost or need one during that time in your life, you can settle for a maca boost instead. Better yet, it has high iodine content, along with several other vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for you, plus no fat, cholesterol, or sodium. Some maca powders even have more calcium in them than a glass of milk!! If you want to know more about this wonder, check out Maca for Women on The Maca Team website where you can also purchase the best quality maca around.

I also learned that maca shouldn't be heated above 118*F / 48*C because according to The Maca Team, this breaks down the nutrients in it. Therefore, you have to be careful about adding it to hot drinks, which I didn't know the first time I used it. It would be better to add it to yogurt or a smoothie instead. If you don't want to mess with powder, you can also buy capsules.

Are you ready to try maca?!?! I hope so because we're having our FIRST giveaway!! If you win, you'll get a sample of 5 teaspoons of maca!! It will be from the bag I purchased, shown above. Act soon!
